Conundrum, enigma, mystery, head-scratcher. According to Merriam-Webster, the word has potential origins from the 17th century as a parody of Latin and it appears to have enjoyed popularity in its use with puns. So it seems the 21st century equivalent of the word should be “wtf,” which I find to be incredibly apt given the completely absurd year that was #2020. This brief fanfare for brass quintet is inspired from my upbringing as a trumpet player and many summers spent at the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar in Boston, MA. It is my hope that students and professionals alike will find this piece to be a thrilling challenge, as well as a gripping opener for any performance.
